There’s a big impact on how well the whole roof structure can resist moist by fastening underlayment to the roof deck before installing the shingles. There are a lot of good underlayment components to choose from. They are:

  • General roof deck protection
  • Valleys and eaves moisture barrier
  • Starter shingles along eaves

Basic underlayments are the rolled material that is horizontally installed beginning at the eaves. Each continuous layer must overlap the one before it. It must be at least two inches on the roof and has 4:12 pitch and steeper than that. Underlayment has several kinds and grades.

Asphalt-saturated felt, and asphalt-saturated felt with fiberglass reinforcement – they are made in two grades which are:

  • 15 pound or #15 paper that weighs around 8-12.5 pounds per 100 square feet. roofer_fixing_the_roof
  • Another one is #30 paper which is thicker and weighs twice heavier than #15. Most professional roofing contractors noblesville recommend #30 paper due to it superior protection.

Other sorts of asphalt underlayment are the modified bitumen and rubberized asphalt. These underlayments are used in severe conditions like extremely hot climates.

  • Starter Shingles – Every roofer includes the starter shingles or rolled shingles material at the eaves. It is an added protection from ice dams and wind-blown moisture. Other noblesville roofing companies install starter shingles in high-wind areas. It is incorporated to the edge of the vertical run of the roofing starting from the eave all the way through the peak on portions that form a gable.

  • Synthetic underlayment –  is a modern trend in roofing. Its cost is two to three times higher than asphalt products. It is expensive, but it offers interesting advantages. It has superior resistance from moisture as the shingle roofing age. Other types of synthetic underlayments are breathable. It is designed to allow the moisture in the attic to evaporate. It releases the moist that is trapped inside the roof structure which causes mold and rot problems. It is commonly made of polyethylene or polypropylene. These polymers are excellent tear-resistant, lightweight, skid-resistant and cooler in the heat. There are a lot of well-known underlayment brands on the market and promises superb performance.

  • Ice and moisture barrier – high volume of water flows through the valleys where the roof surfaces are joined together. The water can penetrate the shingles quickly that is why valleys must have a moisture barrier. It covers every side of the valley by 12 to 16 inches. In climates with freezing winter weather, ice dams are likely to occur at the eaves. Most roofing contractors install a layer of the barrier at the eaves.
